My theory is that Gene's makeup was smeared down his face by the roadie (Sean Delaney) trying to put out his hair when it caught fire at this show.

Ros I was thinking exactly the same. Would be cool to have a shot of Gene trowing the flashpaperbomb in the kids face during the show!
