Ace would occasionally go through the mail. He wouldn't read the letters. He only opened envelopes and packages that looked like they had a gift for him. He liked cool t-shirts.

I'd say you can't really know that.
If he doesn't open up letters, it does not automaticly have to mean mean he doesn't sign autographs.
His assistent could just rack them up and he could sit down to sign a bunch of them every few days?

There was probably a demand. Not as much from when he was in Kiss 8-9 years earlier. I'm sure he found out soon enough that fans mostly wanted tshirts. I'm not sure what the frehleys comet full merchandise catalog consisted of.?

The fan club pulled in additional money, that brought in a decent amount of money. The plan was to have the fan club in place if/when Ace rejoined KISS - and that's when the serious bucks would roll in. Unfortunately, Ace wasn't patient enough and screwed up additional revenue.
