The Love Gun stage set looked a lot like the Destroyer set, but there were still plenty of differences in the show.

The differences in the staging was mostly the lights in the stairs... for the Love Gun tour they were much brighter than on the Rock And Roll Over Tour, and they could flash in sequenzed patterns just like the logo (like you can see in picture 1).

Another new addition to the stage were the lifts on each side (marked a in picture 1).  When the band was announced spotlights would reveal the three mobile members standing in the lifts and as they started to play I Stole Your Love, the lifts would decent towards the stage.

The reason for this addition was probably that the stairs were actually quite dangerous to walk down for the band members in their 7 inch platform boots. At least on one occasion Paul fell and tumbled down the stairs. According to himself he actually landed on the feet, and everybody thought it was part of the show. But as I said: the lifts had probably been added to avoid any broken limbs and necks!!

Also new to the stage was the dragon totem on Gene's side (marked b in picture 1, and seen below here in close-up in picture 2). The dragon could hiss steam, and during the fire breathing stunt in Firehouse, Gene would light his torch at the flame on top of the dragon's head.

Hidden in the stage floor were two hydraulic lifts (like the one under Peter's drumkit) which could lift the band members into the air. According to Dale Sherman's book "Black Diamond, pt. 1" these were already a part of the show in Japan in April 1977, but that is not the case... I can't see them in my copy of the video, anyway!!

But Paul would sing Love Gun from several feet above the stage, standing on the right platform (picture 3). Then during Gene's solo before God of Thunder, Gene would command the left platform to levitate him. From there he would make fireball's appear from the stagefloor (thanks to the help of the pyrotechnics crew!!)

During his guitar solo, Ace would also use the platform at stage right—at least for the first few shows of the tour (photo 4). Perhaps, like the dangerous 77d.jpg (9066 Byte)situation with the stairs, the decision to change this aspect of the show was arrived at for safety reasons. As many KISS fans know, Ace’s balance was a bit off in those days, and some in the KISS camp may actually have feared his falling from the platform.

The platforms would again be used during the finale in Black Diamond (as seen here in picture 5). Gene would stand on the left platform, while Ace and Paul would share the right one. They would go up, together with Peter's drum riser, while all sorts of pyrotechnic effects would explode around them! A spectacular effect... so spectacular actually, that it ended up in the gatefold of Alive II!

Peter's drumriser was also entirely new. During his drumsolo in God of Thunder, the drumriser would forward to the edge of the stage, and during the finale it would rise up as usual, this time revealing no less than two golden cats ready to attack (picture 6).

Aside from these new effects the show was the same it had been the previous years: Gene would still drool blodd during the bass solo; Ace's guitar would still smoke and burst into flame; the band would still have a confetti storm during Rock And Roll All Nite etc.
